Part 1. Part 2-4 will follow soon
INTERVIEW WITH WAVE IN HEAD, 11th Dec 2000
Hello Michael!
>Question: Can I ask you, when you were born?
>Answer: Dont tell anybody! On 23rd May 1971.
>Question: Which education did you get?
>Answer : The usual 10 year school plus Abitur (additional 2 years
of higher education, corresponds to High School graduation note
of translator)
>Question: You make electronic music. Which artists did influence
you?
>Answer: Surely the early Depeche Mode / Vince Clarke and his numerous
projects, Kraftwerk, of course, and later Karl Bartos (Electric Music).
>Question: Your music surely is often called a kind of copy of Depeche
Mode or Erasure. Does that annoy you and how do you yourself see your
music?
>Answer: No, it does not annoy me. Well, I am influenced by them.
But I do not listen for hours to the music of other artists before I
start to write songs. It all happens independently. Honestly said, I
have not listened to music very much during the last years. The ideas
just come, like they come. I can not influence them much. Of course
my voice is often compared to Martin Gore. I can not influence the pitch
of my voice and the way I sing surely depends on the way I learned singing
from my idols.
>Question: So you see WAVE IN HEAD as an independent project, not
as music that reflects the preference of a certain music?
>Answer: I try to find my own way and I hope to surprise you with
it, soon. Of course the result of my own creative process depends on
the kind of music I like myself. But it does not make much sense only
to imitate ones idols Those who like to listen to the original,
will buy the original. If people decide to listen to WAVE IN HEAD, they
do it because they find something in my music, what the do not find
somewhere else. I want to find out what it is and this I will develop
further.
>Question: Ok, whom do you want to reach with your music?
>Answer: Everyone who likes it, the people whom the music of WAVE
IN HEAD appeals to. I have no special ideas. Those who like it, shall
listen to it. I dont care how they look like, how old they are
and what they are.
>Question: What was the reason for you to make music?
>Answer: The fact, that there are machines with which I can make
this kind of music, the fact, that there are computers and synthesisers.
The rest, the ideas and images, have been there long before. But my
abilities in the usage of traditional instruments were and still are
quite small.
> Question: So if there were no synthesisers, only guitars, it would
be unlikely that you would make music.
>Answer: I have nothing against guitars, but without technical instruments
I would not make music today.
>Question: What have you planned for 2001?
>Answer: First, the release of my debut CD. Second, that my music
gets better still, and, once again, to produce something that even surprises
myself.
Thank you for the interview.
